Epic Management Inc., EMI (Formerly El-Rayes Environmental Corporation) was founded in 1992 by Dr. Hamdy El-Rayes, MBA, P.Eng., P.E. Dr. El-Rayes brought to EMI a unique mix of national and international expertise. His broad view of business, environmental management and sustainable development stems from his accumulated experience as a director of the Pollution Prevention Institute at Kansas State University, a university educator, a manufacturing plant manager, and a consulting engineer to businesses and governments in the USA and Canada.

EMI was established to provide services to businesses and governments with the objective of enhancing economic growth and sustaining a clean environment. EMI's approach to addressing economic and environmental issues stemmed from the founder's firm belief that a sustainable environment has a positive impact on economic growth as demonstrated by successful companies such as 3M. These companies integrated environmental protection in their management decisions since the early 70's. They have achieved better economic growth than those whose objective was to just meet regulatory requirements.

Since its inception, EMI initiated several projects to promote sustainable development in British Columbia and elsewhere (in Canada and the USA). The projects emphasized the importance of collaboration between governments and the private sector to achieve sustainable development. A project that was initaited by EMI to involve a business sector and various levels of governments including federal, provincial and municipal governments s was the auto-recycling pollution prevention project. The project was selected by the United Nations (UN-HABITAT) as an model for best management practices and collaborative efforts between governments and the private sector.
El-Rayes Environmental Corporation viewed that integrating environmental management with other management activities helps the management team to achieve better results. In the year 2000, EEC decided to expand its consulting services under a new name - Epic Management Inc. (EMI).
